PORT STEPHENS NSW | Nicole Ward and Vlad Shatrov have won the opening round of Trail Run Australia’s 2019/20 Season, with magnificent performances at Port Stephens.
Ward stunned on-lookers with a commanding 8-minute and 3-second win over Kora Murphy in the 21km Tomaree Trail half-marathon.
Ward finished in a time of 01:53:14 and was greeted at this finish line by her daughter Miller.
Only two minutes later, her husband Bern crossed the line, claiming a silver medal in his age category event (50-59).
Nicole said this was her first ever competitive Trail Run.
“I’m so happy to have done this, and really happy with the result. It’s my first time Trail Running, but I’ve competed a lot as triathlete.”
Meantime, Sarina Tomchin came third, in a time of 02:04:48.
While Ward enjoyed a very comfortable winning margin, the Men’s Champ Vlad Shatrov won a tight contest.
Shatrov finished in 01:28:08, a mere 34-seconds ahead of Ronnie Sparks (01:28:42)
The Champion said it was a tough race.
“Those boys really pushed me. It was tough out there, I really enjoyed, and am so happy to have won.
