Beginner’s Guide to Trail Running
Everything You Need to Know to Get Started
Imagine This…
The sun is rising over the ocean.
You’re standing with hundreds of other runners, all smiling, chatting and wondering what lies around the next corner. There’s no pressure to be the fastest, no expectation to be the fittest—just a shared sense of excitement and adventure.
An hour later you’re standing on a spectacular lookout, surrounded by incredible scenery, thinking…
“Why didn’t I do this years ago?”
That’s trail running.
It’s not just about running. It’s about discovering amazing places, challenging yourself, meeting great people and creating memories you’ll still be talking about long after you’ve crossed the finish line.
And the best part?
You don’t need to be an elite athlete to experience it.
What is Trail Running?
Trail running is simply running—or even jogging and hiking—on natural surfaces such as bush tracks, forest trails, coastal paths and mountain trails.
Unlike road running, every trail is different. One minute you’re weaving through towering forests, the next you’re running beside the ocean or climbing to breathtaking lookouts. The changing terrain makes every event feel like an adventure rather than simply another run.
Whether you’re moving from road running or putting on a pair of running shoes for the very first time, trail running is one of the most rewarding ways to improve your fitness while reconnecting with nature.
Why So Many People Are Falling in Love with Trail Running
Trail running offers all the cardiovascular benefits of road running while also improving balance, strength and agility thanks to the varied terrain.
But the benefits go well beyond fitness.
Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and increase overall wellbeing. Instead of watching traffic lights and footpaths, you’ll find yourself surrounded by forests, mountains, beaches and wildlife.
It’s little wonder trail running has become one of Australia’s fastest-growing outdoor sports.
The Australian Government’s Healthdirect guide to running for beginners provides excellent information about the health benefits of running and getting started safely.
Think Trail Running Isn’t For You?
This is probably the biggest misconception.
Many people imagine trail running is only for ultra-marathon runners flying through rugged mountain ranges.
The reality couldn’t be more different.
At Trail Run Australia, we regularly see:
✔ First-time runners completing their very first event.
✔ Families enjoying a day outdoors together.
✔ Friends walking sections of the course while taking in the scenery.
✔ Experienced athletes chasing personal bests and ultra-distance goals.
You don’t have to run every hill.
You don’t have to finish first.
You don’t need expensive gear.
And you certainly don’t need to call yourself an athlete.
All you need is the willingness to take that first step.
What Do You Need to Get Started?
One of the best things about trail running is how little equipment you need.
For your first few trail runs, you’ll simply need:
- A comfortable pair of running shoes with reasonable grip
- Comfortable clothing suited to the weather
- Water, particularly on longer runs
- A mobile phone for safety
- A sense of adventure
- And maybe a buddy to share the adventure with.
As your confidence and distances grow, you may choose to invest in trail-specific shoes, a hydration vest and other gear, but there’s no need to buy everything before you begin.
World Athletics also recommends making gradual changes to your training and equipment to reduce the risk of injury.
There’s a Distance for Everyone
One of the things that makes Trail Run Australia different is that there’s an event for everyone.
Whether you’re taking on your first trail run or dreaming of completing an ultra one day, there’s a distance designed to suit your goals.
5–6km
Perfect for first-time trail runners, families and anyone wanting to experience the trails without feeling overwhelmed.
10–12km
Ideal for runners progressing from parkrun or road running and looking for their next adventure.
15–21km
A fantastic challenge for those ready to step up to longer distances while enjoying incredible scenery.
Marathon & Ultra Distances
For experienced trail runners wanting to test themselves on some of Australia’s most spectacular courses.
The most important thing is choosing a distance that matches your current fitness and enjoying the experience rather than worrying about the clock.
Why Trail Run Australia?
Trail Run Australia isn’t just about the finish line—it’s about making every runner feel they belong.
From first-timers to experienced ultra runners, our events are designed to inspire confidence, encourage adventure and create unforgettable memories. With a choice of distances, friendly support, well-marked courses and experienced event crews, there’s never been a better place to begin your trail running journey.
It’s not about how fast you go.
It’s about discovering what’s possible.
Train Smarter, Not Harder
When you’re starting out:
- Walk the hills—everyone does.
- Slow your pace compared with road running.
- Increase your weekly distance gradually.
- Include strength training to improve balance and stability.
- Practise on uneven terrain before race day.
Trail running is measured just as much by elevation and time on your feet as it is by kilometres, so don’t compare your trail pace with your road pace.
Healthdirect also recommends increasing your weekly running gradually while allowing adequate recovery between sessions.
Respect the Trails
One of the best parts of trail running is experiencing Australia’s incredible national parks, forests and coastal reserves.
Help protect these special places by staying on marked trails, taking all rubbish home and respecting wildlife and other trail users.
Following the internationally recognised Leave No Trace Principles helps ensure these beautiful environments remain available for everyone to enjoy.
Your Adventure Starts Today
One thing we see all the time on social media is people tagging their friends and saying:
“We should do this next year.”
The reality is, next year often becomes the year after. And before you know it, another opportunity has passed.
So why wait?
Grab a friend.
Bring your partner.
Invite your kids.
Get your running club together.
Or simply come on your own.
You’ll quickly discover you’re surrounded by people who were once standing exactly where you are now.
You don’t need to be fast.
You don’t need expensive gear.
You don’t need years of experience.
You just need to take that first step.
Because every experienced trail runner remembers their first event.
The nerves. The excitement. The climbs. The views. The feeling of crossing the finish line.
Now it’s your turn.
Browse the Trail Run Australia event calendar, choose the distance that’s right for you and discover why thousands of Australians have fallen in love with trail running.
Your first finish line is waiting.
The hardest part is entering your first event. After that, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.
Don’t put it off until next year. Next year never comes. Time to live in the now. Choose your event, invite someone to join you, and start creating memories you’ll be talking about long after you’ve crossed the finish line.
“As Lao Tzu said, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’
Your trail running journey begins with your first event.”
